Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Portuguese Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling frequency is every 3 weeks. No days of bathing advisories or prohibitions due to short-term pollution occurred in the 2024 bathing season. Potential microbiological pollution sources include faecal contamination from tributary rivers (Gerês, Caldo, and Cávado) and damage to sanitation infrastructure around the reservoir.

Risks

Short-term pollution events are unlikely but may occur during precipitation due to microbiological load entering the reservoir or from untreated effluent discharges if sewage treatment plants (Admeus, Bairros, or Gerês) malfunction. Macroalgae proliferation potential is moderate; cyanobacteria and phytoplankton proliferation potential is unlikely.
