Location

Brindisi, Puglia region, within the southern boundary of the Torre Guaceto Marine Protected Area in Brindisi. Parking and specific facility information were being compiled by the Puglia Region.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2017-2020). No direct sewage discharge outfalls or watercourse inflows present. No short-duration pollution events recorded in the past four years.

Risks

Dinoflagellate microalga Ostreopsis ovata blooms occur seasonally from July to September. These blooms have caused mortality and stress in marine organisms including starfish, sea urchins, crabs, and cephalopod molluscs. Bathers have experienced transient discomfort including rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis coinciding with high concentrations of Ostreopsis ovata, particularly after rough seas which promote marine aerosol formation and toxin dispersal through the air.
