Arrifes is a coastal bathing water on a beach with restricted use associated with sensitive natural systems. The beach features golden sand in a small bay surrounded by low cliffs that are heavily sculpted by rain and waves, with hollows, arches, and galleries. Rock formations are present in the water. The beach extends for 150 metres.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2024 complies with Decreto-Lei 135/09. Bathing waters at Arrifes (PTCT2P) and S. Rafael (PTCU7F) are grouped together, with Arrifes as the representative monitoring point. No days of bathing advisories or prohibitions were recorded due to short-term pollution events during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution lasting 72 hours or less is scarce. Microbiological contamination may occur due to sporadic malfunction of sanitation infrastructures or during heavy rainfall events causing surface run-off or overflows. Potential for cyanobacteria proliferation is unlikely. Macroalgae proliferation is uncommon. Phytoplankton proliferation is unlikely.
