Attersee is Austria's largest inland lake by surface area, covering over 46 km². It has extremely low nutrient loading and is the clearest lake in Upper Austria, with visibility depths up to 20 m. The lake's distinctive turquoise coloration results from biological chalk precipitation in open water caused by plankton algae. The bathing area is located at Sprinzensteinpark on the western shore.
