The Attersee near Seewalchen is Austria's largest inland lake with a surface area exceeding 46 km² and depths reaching almost 170 m. The lake exhibits extremely low nutrient loading and is the clearest lake in Upper Austria with visibility depths up to 20 m. Its characteristic turquoise coloration results from biological calcium precipitation in the open water caused by plankton algae metabolism. The bathing area is publicly operated.
