Badesee Lampertheim

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Badesee Lampertheim is a small gravel extraction lake with a surface area of 3.4 hectares located in southern Hesse at the edge of the Lampertheimer Altrhein in the Rhine floodplain nature reserve. Despite its small size, it reaches a maximum depth of approximately 17 metres and an average depth of 6 metres, allowing for stable temperature stratification in summer. The lake is part of the Biedensand-Bäder Lampertheim facilities, which also include an open-air swimming pool and indoor swimming pool, providing bathing opportunities year-round depending on weather conditions.

Water

Gravel extraction lake (Baggersee) with a surface area of 3.4 hectares, maximum depth of 15.39 metres, and average depth of 7.17 metres. Elevation of 87 metres above sea level. Located in the Upper Rhine plain in an area of thick sand deposits.

Location

Located at the southwestern edge of Lampertheim in southern Hesse, accessible via road B44 at the town's edge. The lake's western shore borders the Lampertheimer Altrhein, with residential buildings nearby to the east. Ample parking is usually available at the facility entrance.

Facilities

Two large sandy beaches (each 200 metres long and 5–10 metres wide) on western and eastern shores with adjoining lawns. Showers, toilets, two kiosks, large water slide, and playground available. Trees provide shade in summer. Angling area separated from bathing area on northern shore.

Season

Official bathing season from 15 May 2026 to 29 September 2026. Pre-season monitoring begins before the season starts, with at least monthly testing during the season.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality (2021–2025). Monitoring shows consistently low indicator bacteria (enterococci and E. coli) throughout the year. Trophic classification is oligotrophic with little risk of future cyanobacterial blooms. No mass cyanobacterial blooms observed during bathing seasons. No potential pollution from wastewater, stormwater, or sewage discharges is known. Water birds have been frequently observed on the shore, presenting a possible source of contamination. Nutrient loading is low and no significant algal blooms are expected in the near term.

Risks

Frequent water birds on shore may introduce faecal contamination. Short-term cyanobacterial blooms cannot be excluded despite low nutrient loading. Cyanobacteria can release substances causing allergic reactions or skin irritation.
