Baggersee near Happurg is a bathing water designated for European Union monitoring. Water Quality

Water quality classification: EU bathing water undergoing mandatory monitoring. All 2025 samples (April–September) assessed as bacteriologically unobjectionable. Enterococci levels ranged from <10 to 32 MPN/100ml. Escherichia coli levels ranged from <10 to 134 MPN/100ml. No limit exceedances reported.

Risks

Planktothrix rubescens (burgundy blood algae, a cyanobacteria subtype) is found regularly during winter months. Prolonged skin contact or ingestion of water containing these algae can cause health impairment. Serious health effects including death have been documented in dogs and other pets. Pets should not drink from the lake during algae occurrence.
