Bagno Muggesano is a bathing area located in the coastal municipality of Muggia in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. It is situated on a concrete pier with breakwaters along the outer coast at the entrance to the port of Trieste. The bathing area extends approximately 0.278 km along this equipped section of coastline. Water quality has been classified as excellent based on monitoring data from 2015–2018.

Location

Muggia, Trieste Province, Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Located on the equipped pier section of the coast at the external entrance to Trieste port. Coordinates: 45.607230°N, 13.764248°E.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent for the reference years 2015–2018 under Legislative Decree 116/08. Escherichia coli at 90th percentile: 53 CFU/100 ml; at 95th percentile: 75 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal enterococci at 90th percentile: 27 CFU/100 ml; at 95th percentile: 44 CFU/100 ml. No significant variations in water quality were observed across bathing seasons 2015–2018. One pollution event occurred in June 2016 due to severe thunderstorms and probable overflow of the Fugnan stream; this event resolved within 24 hours. No short-term pollution events were recorded in 2017 and 2018.

Risks

Short-term pollution events can occur under adverse meteorological and marine conditions, particularly during heavy rainfall. Sources of potential contamination include coastal runoff and sewage overflow activation during unfavorable weather. No cyanobacterial blooms or toxic algal proliferation have been recorded.
