Balsa de La Morea is an inland reservoir located in Beriáin, Navarra, Spain, at an altitude of 452 metres. The reservoir is a permanent, deep, non-saline inland lake formed in a sediment basin. It has an initial capacity of 800,000 cubic metres and is fed by an irrigation channel from the Errekaldea stream. The bathing area is situated near an industrial zone and serves recreational purposes during the designated swimming season.

Water

Inland reservoir (lake) with sedimentary substrate including detritic, rocky (sandstone), and evaporite-marl layers. Bed composed of clay, silt, and gravel. Initial capacity 800,000 cubic metres. Surface area of drainage basin 50.41 square kilometres. Maximum altitude 1,149 metres; minimum altitude 452 metres. Mean basin slope 15.15 percent.

Location

Beriáin, Navarra, Spain, approximately 9 kilometres south of Pamplona. Access via the N-121 road towards Zaragoza; take the Beriáin exit at kilometre 9 and proceed 200 metres to the Morea Sur industrial zone. No parking facilities available.

Facilities

Informational signs present. Dock/embarkation point available. Recreational zone. Domestic animal access permitted. Waste collection once every three months. No lifeguards, rescue posts, bar, snack facilities, toilets, showers, parking, or accessible facilities for disabled persons.

Water Quality

Water classified as heavily modified. Fecal coliform monitoring (2004-2007) showed occasional exceedances of the former mandatory limit of 2,000 CFU/100 ml. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococcal concentrations measured during 2008-2009 seasons. Quality classifications from 2003-2009 indicated compliance with both guideline and mandatory values in some years and non-compliance in others. Ten named point sources discharge wastewater upstream via tributaries; all evaluated as non-significant contamination pressure.

Risks

Area exhibits poor conservation status with significant litter in the bathing zone. Upstream wastewater discharges from ten identified point sources (settlements and industrial facilities) may affect water quality through tributary flows.
