Beetzsee is a 372-hectare natural lake in western Brandenburg, consisting of four connected basins linked by navigable canals. The lake is approximately 16 kilometres long and has a maximum depth of 9 metres. It is located in the Westhavelland Nature Park and is popular for swimming, sailing, fishing, and water sports. The lake is highly eutrophic with restricted visibility, particularly during warm summer months when water clarity averages 0.6 metres.

Water

Natural freshwater lake, 372 hectares in area, maximum depth 9 metres, mean depth 3.4 metres. Water level fluctuations approximately 1.0–1.2 metres. Water exchange time exceeds 30 days. Sandy geology and shoreline. Unstratified. Freshwater with salinity less than 0.5 ppt.

Toilets, kiosk, waste disposal, parking, sunbathing meadow, beach and volleyball facilities, fire pit, changing rooms, disabled access to bathing area.

Season

Monitored during bathing season according to Brandenburg Bathing Water Regulation (BbgBadV), with sampling every four weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as good (2020–2023 and 2021–2024 periods). Previously classified as excellent (2015–2018 through 2019–2022). Microbiological monitoring shows E. coli 95th percentile ranging from 86–336 CFU/100 ml and intestinal enterococci 95th percentile ranging from 68–383 CFU/100 ml across monitoring periods. Ecological status class 4 (unsatisfactory). Naturally eutrophic, measured as polytrophic. pH range 6.9–9.1. Water temperature range 14–26.1 °C.

Risks

Fecal contamination from bird populations and increased boat tourism. Potential future mass development of cyanobacteria assessed as low to moderate. Potential future phytoplankton mass development assessed as moderate. No observed cyanobacterial blooms in the preceding four years. No risk of cercarial dermatitis.
