Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Beetzsee is a 175-hectare ice-age tunnel valley lake in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district of western Brandenburg, part of the Westhavelland Nature Park. The lake is over 16 km long and consists of four lake basins connected by narrow navigable canals. It has a maximum depth of 8 metres and a sandy lake bed. The lake is very popular for sailing, angling, swimming, and water tourism.

Water

Natural lake with a surface area of 175 hectares. Maximum depth 7.8 metres, mean depth 2.9 metres. Water transparency ranges from 0.3 to 1 metre (mean 0.7 metres for 2021-2024). Water temperature: minimum 13°C, maximum 25.8°C, mean 21°C (2021-2024). pH value: 7.1 to 8.86, mean 8.3 (2013-2016). Freshwater lake with salinity less than 0.5‰. Unlaminated lake with water exchange time less than 1 year.

Location

Beetzsee is located in Potsdam-Mittelmark district, western Brandenburg, belonging to the town of Brandenburg. The bathing site Päwesin, KiEZ Bollmannsruh is situated at coordinates: Rechtswert 3342800, Hochwert 5819773.

Season

Monitoring conducted every four weeks during the official bathing season according to Brandenburg Bathing Water Regulations (BbgBadV from 8 February 2008).

Water Quality

Bathing water classification: Excellent (ausgezeichnet) for all assessment periods 2016-2019 through 2021-2024. Microbiological parameters for 2021-2024: E. coli 95-percentile 63/100ml, 90-percentile 50/100ml; Intestinal enterococci 95-percentile 29/100ml, 90-percentile 26/100ml. No exceedances of microbiological parameter single values recorded. Ecological status class according to Water Framework Directive: Class 4 (unsatisfactory) as of 2024. Naturally eutrophic, measured nutrient content is polytrophic.

Risks

Macroalgae and aquatic plants present. Medium risk of future phytoplankton mass development. No cyanobacterial water blooms observed during bathing season. No danger of mass cyanobacteria development identified. No danger of swimmer's itch from cercariae identified. Short-term microbiological contamination not expected. Other contamination not expected.
