Bellaria - Rio Pircio is a sandy beach bathing area located in Bellaria Igea Marina, Emilia-Romagna region, extending for approximately 3.3 kilometers. The area experiences high tourist usage with numerous hotels and beach establishments, and features continuous lifeguard service during the bathing season. The beach width varies between 60 and 100 meters.

Water

Coastal marine water on a high-stability alluvial plain. The bathing area extends 3.286 square kilometers along the Rio Pircio watercourse, which drains into the sea in this location.

Location

Bellaria Igea Marina, Rimini Province, Emilia-Romagna region. The bathing water area is designated as part of the central-southern coastal area.

Facilities

37 beach establishments with first aid services, toilet facilities including disabled access, hot showers, absence of architectural barriers, food and beverage points, and sports facilities. Lifeguard service operates during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference years 2019-2022). Escherichia Coli (90th percentile): 43 CFU/100ml, (95th percentile): 58 CFU/100ml. Intestinal Enterococci (90th percentile): 10 CFU/100ml, (95th percentile): 10 CFU/100ml. An anomalous situation occurred on 26 July 2022 with exceedance of Escherichia Coli limits; this was classified as an anomalous situation by the European Commission. Four white water discharge systems and one emergency overflow from a separate black water network drain into the Rio Pircio; the white water discharges are considered non-influential on bathing water quality.

Risks

One emergency overflow system (1SF) from a separate black water network could potentially discharge sewage into the Rio Pircio in case of pump failure or emergency. Phytoplankton bloom (Fibrocapsa japonica) was recorded in July 2022. Potential eutrophication linked to the Rio Pircio presence.
