Bitetos

Portugal Lake 3 - Sufficient

Bitetos is a rural beach with extensive sand bordered by trees. The beach features a bar, sanitary facilities, shower, first aid post, and parking. Upstream of the beach there is a leisure boat marina and a pier for cruise boats. The bathing water is located in the Douro River basin in Marco de Canaveses municipality.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012. Weekly sampling is conducted. In the 2024 bathing season, bathing was advised against or prohibited for 4 days due to short-term pollution events. Faecal contamination may originate from Loureiro stream which flows near the beach, from illegal effluent discharges, or from malfunctions of sanitation infrastructure (Bitetos WWTP or Alpendurada WWTP).

Risks

Short-term pollution likely during heavy rainfall causing surface run-off or overflow, illegal discharges of untreated effluents, or failure of sanitation infrastructure. Potential faecal contamination from Loureiro stream. Proliferation of cyanobacteria, macroalgae, and phytoplankton is unlikely.
