Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2017-2020). The Lama Cupa stream mouth is identified as a potential point source of pollution affecting bathing water quality. No direct wastewater discharges to sea are present.

Risks

Dinoflagellate microalgae Ostreopsis ovata blooms occur seasonally from July to September. Marine organism mortality and distress (starfish, sea urchins, crabs, cephalopod molluscs) have occurred during high Ostreopsis ovata concentrations. Bathers have reported transient symptoms (rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, conjunctivitis) coinciding with high microalgae concentrations, particularly after rough sea conditions when marine aerosols form and disperse the toxin through the air. No short-duration pollution events recorded in the past four years.
