Camping Le Chaudeau

Camping le Chaudeau is a bathing site located at a private campground in Saint Géraud de Corps in the Dordogne department. The site consists of a pond fed primarily by springs, surrounded by reeds and forest, with a sandy beach that is renewed partially each year and cleaned daily. Swimming is open and unsupervised, exclusively for camping residents. The average summer attendance is approximately several bathers per day.

Water

A pond approximately several hectares in area with an average depth of several metres and a maximum depth of approximately several metres. The water originates principally from springs. The pond is located downstream of a watershed composed of woods, coppice, meadows, and a wetland. The bathing zone is approximately several metres long by several metres wide. The bottom of the bathing zone consists of sand to a depth of several metres. Fishing is also practised on the pond.

Location

Saint Géraud de Corps, Dordogne department, in the Périgord Pourpre region. The campground is located in the Dordogne river basin. The site has parking available. Swimming access is restricted to camping residents only.

Facilities

The campground provides direct and unrestricted access to the bathing zone for residents. A sandy beach with dimensions of approximately several metres long by several metres wide is available. Accessibility for persons with reduced mobility is unknown. Animals are not permitted.

Season

The bathing zone is open from the start of the camping season. Daily surveillance is conducted throughout the bathing season, with bacteriological analyses performed every 15 days and cyanobacteria analyses performed monthly.

Water Quality

Monitoring results from 2005 to 2010 show the site classified as 'Good' in most tests, with one 'Medium' classification on 17 June 2008 and several 'Unreported' classifications. Bacterial testing shows E. coli levels predominantly below 100 n/100mL. Cyanobacteria were detected in multiple years (2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010) with varying concentrations, including species such as Oscillatoria, Microcystis, and Phormidium. According to the 2006/7/CE directive, the site classification for the 2010 season is 'Excellent'.

Risks

Identified pollution sources include malfunctioning stormwater systems during heavy rainfall causing soil leaching into the pond; suspected malfunctioning sanitation systems with discharge and odours toward the pond; acts of malice resulting in presence of dead animals, fish, and birds; and cyanobacteria blooms characterised by discolouration, foam, and fish mortality. No closures of the bathing area due to pollution have occurred since the site opened.
