France Lake 1 - Excellent

Lac de Schoenau is a bathing lake with a sandy beach 50 metres wide and very transparent water. The bathing zone is divided into a shallow area (maximum 0.5 metres depth, 60 metres wide and 15 metres long) and a deeper area (0.5 to 1.8 metres depth, 80 metres wide and 15 metres long) with a gentle slope. The lake is a former Rhine backwater that maintains water circulation from south to north, fed by groundwater that keeps the water constantly renewed with minimal stagnation.

Water

Former Rhine backwater lake. Shallow bathing zone 0.5 metres maximum depth; deeper zone 0.5 to 1.8 metres depth. Water is very transparent and constantly renewed by groundwater discharge. Water circulates from south to north.

Location

Access is primarily via the Tulla cycle path, with dedicated bicycle and electric scooter parking near the beach. Vehicle access is via departmental road 52, with parking on a grassed parking area outside the camping area and lake. Entry fees are collected at the camping entrance.

Facilities

Lifeguard station on beach with elevated chair. First aid post on beach at lifeguard location. Toilets and showers at camping entrance accessible from beach. No domestic animals permitted in beach or water area. Bicycle and electric scooter parking available.

Season

Supervised bathing open 1 July to 31 August, 12:00 to 18:00. May open weekends only in June depending on weather. Unsupervised bathing prohibited 1 April to 30 October when camping is open. Access may be restricted due to construction work or exceptional weather events.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as very good according to 2024 monitoring. No cases of foam deposits or green algae proliferation in recent summers. Potential pollution sources identified from camping sanitary facilities and camper van waste (8 sealed septic tanks validated by SDEA in 2024), but risks are limited due to tank integrity and distance from water body.
