Location

Lesina, Province of Foggia, Puglia region, Italy. Located 30 meters to the right of Canale Punta Pietre Nere.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2017–2020). The potential pollution source is the mouth of Canale Acquarotta. No direct wastewater discharges to sea are present.

Risks

Dinoflagellate microalgae Ostreopsis ovata blooms occur seasonally from July to September, causing mortality and distress in marine organisms (starfish, sea urchins, crabs, cephalopod mollusks). Bathers have reported temporary symptoms including rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis during periods of elevated Ostreopsis ovata concentrations, particularly after storms when marine aerosol formation spreads toxins into the air.
