Location

Monopoli, Province of Bari, Puglia region. The bathing water extends over an area of 3.61 km.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2017–2020). No short-term pollution events were recorded over the last four years. No direct wastewater discharges to sea are present.

Risks

Dinoflagellate microalga Ostreopsis ovata blooms occur seasonally from July to September. These blooms have caused mortality and stress in marine organisms including starfish, sea urchins, crabs, and cephalopod mollusks. Transient illnesses in swimmers have been reported including rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis coinciding with elevated Ostreopsis ovata concentrations, particularly after rough seas which promote marine aerosol formation that disperses toxins into the air.
