Castelo is a coastal bathing water located on a beach with restricted use associated with sensitive natural systems. The beach features golden sand with cliffs and rocky formations that create small bays and recesses. The beach extends 120 metres and experiences a tidal range of 3.4 metres with mean wave heights of 0.5 metres. Prevailing winds are from the northwest.

Location

Albufeira municipality. Monitoring point coordinates: 37.0736° N, 8.2935° W (ETRS 89).

Season

15 May to 15 October 2025. Monthly sampling frequency.

Water Quality

Water quality classification in 2024 complies with Decreto-Lei 135/09. Bathing water Castelo and Coelha are grouped together for monitoring purposes. No days of bathing advisories or prohibitions due to short-term pollution occurred during the 2024 bathing season. Short-term pollution is considered scarce but microbiological contamination may occur due to sporadic malfunction of sanitation infrastructures or during heavy rainfall events causing surface run-off and overflows.

Risks

Potential microbiological pollution sources include sanitation infrastructures. Cyanobacteria proliferation is unlikely. Macroalgae proliferation is uncommon. Phytoplankton proliferation is unlikely.
