Fos-sur-Mer contains five bathing areas located in the Gulf of Fos, south of the Fos to Port de Bouc navigation canal. The two main supervised beaches are Cavaou and Grande Plage, while Saint Gervais, Phare, and Lafarge are unsupervised zones. Water quality classifications indicate excellent quality at Cavaou beach and good quality at Grande Plage, with no substantiated pollution risk identified.

Water

Sandy beaches in the Gulf of Fos with gentle, regular slopes. Cavaou beach extends 1.2 km in length with widths between 25 and 60 metres; water depth does not exceed 2 metres within 100 metres of shore. Grande Plage extends 440 metres in length with widths between 15 and 45 metres; water depth does not exceed 2 metres within 100 metres of shore.

Location

Fos-sur-Mer, in the Gulf of Fos region. Cavaou beach is located between Saint Gervais port and the Methane Terminal. Grande Plage is situated immediately east of Saint Gervais port. Free parking with 500-space capacity is available at Cavaou beach.

Facilities

Cavaou beach: lifeguard post with information service, 6 toilets connected to collective sewerage, outdoor showers at three locations, waste bins every 50 metres, disabled access and reserved parking, two seasonal snack vendors and one restaurant. Grande Plage: lifeguards, toilets, showers, waste bins.

Season

Cavaou beach: 1 June to 31 August, plus final two weekends of May; supervised 10:00–18:00 weekdays, 11:00–19:00 weekends and holidays. Grande Plage: maintained 1 June to 30 September; supervised 15 June to 29 August, 10:00–18:00 weekdays, 11:00–19:00 weekends and holidays.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: excellent at Cavaou beach, good at Grande Plage. Cavaou beach received the Blue Flag award in 2010 for the 17th consecutive year. Water quality monitoring results from DDASS (2006–2010) and sanitary quality assessment indicate no substantiated pollution risk.

Risks

Potential pollution sources from rainfall drainage, wastewater discharge, and seasonal commercial installations. Shellfish farming activity present in the area.
