Cavez

Portugal River 2 - Good

Cavez is a rural beach located on the banks of the Moimenta river in the Douro River basin. The bathing area is artificially created through two dams. The beach is situated approximately 100 metres upstream from the confluence of the Moimenta river with the Tâmega river. About 2.5 kilometres upstream on the Tâmega River, the Daivões Hydroelectric Plant discharges water.

Rural beach on the Moimenta river, a tributary of the Tâmega River in the Douro River basin. The bathing area is artificially created through two dams.

Location

Located in Cabeceiras de Basto municipality. The beach is approximately 100 metres upstream from the mouth of the Moimenta river where it meets the Tâmega river. Coordinates: Latitude 41.51616°, Longitude -7.89003°.

Season

2025 bathing season: 5 July to 7 September.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 of June 3rd, as amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012 of May 23rd. Sampling frequency is every 2 weeks. No days of bathing prohibition or advisory due to short-term pollution were recorded during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Potential faecal contamination from discharges in the Moimenta river, clandestine domestic underground tanks, or heavy rainfall events that can entrain microbiological load from soil. Cyanobacteria, macroalgae, and phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no historical record. Bloom occurrence is unlikely. An alert system to warn against bathing in case of pollution risk has not yet been implemented.
