Colonia Enel is a bathing beach in Senigallia, Marche region, with fine quartz and feldspar sand of calcareous composition. The beach slopes at an average gradient of 3% and extends 1200 metres in length and 60 metres in width. The distance between medium-low and high water (safe water limit) is approximately 80 metres, with astronomical tides of 30–50 centimetres. The surrounding area comprises urban settlements and tourist facilities with a railway line passing through.

Water Quality

Classification E. Water quality monitoring conducted by ARPAM for Escherichia coli shows variable results across 2010: January 10 CFU/100 ml, March 300 CFU/100 ml, May 80 CFU/100 ml, June 80 CFU/100 ml, August 10 CFU/100 ml, September 20 CFU/100 ml, November 10 CFU/100 ml, with other months below detection limits. Sewage treatment via activated sludge facility with capacity of 20,000 cubic metres per day. Urban population served approximately 39,300 equivalent inhabitants; 770 equivalent inhabitants from industrial activities. Summer fluctuation adds 10,300–20,500 equivalent inhabitants.

Risks

During heavy rainfall, sewer overflow occurs through multiple discharge points bypassing the treatment facility. Fosso Portelle stream discharges to sea via conduit with overflow outlet. April 2007 incident involved fuel oil spill from API Refinery conduit rupture at pontile, causing temporary closure of bathing area. Phytoplankton proliferation of non-toxic Fibrocapsa japonica observed in August 2009, causing reddish-brown discolouration and oily water consistency.
