Le Claps is a bathing site located 1.5 km upstream of Luc en Diois in the Drôme region. The site is situated in a river bend where the Drôme River forms a pronounced curve around an old landslide. The bathing zone consists of an engineered basin created by a curved wall on the right bank and a natural sloping bank on the left, with the left bank being the more frequently used swimming area. The water is flowing river water without heating, and the riverbed is composed of large pebbles with fine sediment deposits that users stir up during swimming.

Water

The Drôme River, a flowing river with unheated water. The bathing zone is approximately 2,000 m² with a mean length of 50 m, width of 40 m, and mean depth of 1.5 m. Summer low-flow discharge (QMNA5) is 0.15 m³/s. The riverbed consists of large pebbles colonised by fine sediment from a marly watershed.

Location

Located 1.5 km upstream of Luc en Diois in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Drôme department. The site is situated between the foothills of Pic de Luc and Clamontard mountains. It is highly accessible from Route Départementale 93 and is located next to a snack bar near the first bridge over the Drôme River.

Facilities

Free bathing. Non-supervised. A natural beach of approximately 85 m² on the south, located on the left bank. Stairs on the right bank provide water access, although entry is abrupt without gradual progression. A snack bar is present on site.

Season

Official bathing season from 1 June to 15 September, with peak attendance between 14 July and 15 August. The river may be accessible from late May and through late September depending on weather. The bathing zone is accessible year-round.

Water Quality

The bathing profile is classified as type 1, indicating that water pollution risk is not established. Water turbidity is elevated due to fine sediment resuspension from the river bottom caused by bather movement.

Risks

Fine sediment suspension causing elevated water turbidity. The right bank is subject to scouring risk. During the bathing season (1 June to 15 September), the basin is closed with gates and timber boards to raise water level; outside this period, gates are raised and boards removed to allow natural river level and fine sediment transport.
