Etang De Jouarres

France Lake 1 - Excellent

Etang de Jouarres is an artificial lake covering 95 hectares located on the border between the Hérault and Aude departments in southern France. Created approximately forty years ago, it serves purposes of irrigation and water supply to the Canal du Midi during summer months. The lake receives water from the Aude river during flood periods via the Canal du Midi, and is managed as part of a complex hydraulic system involving the Orb river, the Aude-Jouarres system, and the Canal du Midi.

Water

Artificial lake with a surface area of 95 hectares, maximum depth of 4 metres, and maximum capacity of 2.5 million cubic metres. Fed by the Aude river during flood periods via the Canal du Midi. Receives two tributaries: the Ruisseau de Vidal from the north and the Ruisseau de l'Etang de Jouarres from the west, both with intermittent flow that cease during summer months.

Location

The lake is situated at the boundary of Hérault (commune of Olonzac) and Aude (communes of Azille, Homps, and Pépieux). The bathing zone is managed by the Syndicat Mixte d'Aménagement de l'Etang de Jouarres.

Water Quality

Classified as Type 1 bathing profile with no established pollution risk. Water quality rated as excellent in 2010. Identified as an artificial lake water body under the Water Framework Directive and SDAGE Rhône Méditerranée 2010-2015. Chemical status is good; ecological status objective is postponed to 2021.

Risks
