Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2017-2020). No discharge of urban wastewater treatment plants reaches the sea in this area. No direct wastewater discharges or watercourses that could convey pollutants into the bathing area are present. No short-term pollution events were recorded in the last four years. The area is not characterized by algal blooms or cyanobacterial proliferation.

Risks

Dinoflagellate microalga Ostreopsis ovata blooms occur seasonally from July to September. Marine organism deaths and suffering (starfish, sea urchins, crabs, cephalopod molluscs) have occurred during high concentrations of Ostreopsis ovata. Bathers have reported transient symptoms including rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis during high concentrations of Ostreopsis ovata, particularly after rough seas when marine aerosol formation can disperse the toxin through the air.
