Fond-Boucher is a small cove beach located in Bellefontaine, Martinique, composed entirely of pebbles with rocks originating from cliff erosion. The surrounding natural zone features dry forest vegetation including red gum trees, Ti-Baum, logwood trees, acacias, and cacti. An upstream area contains a multipurpose hall, fishermen's shacks, a private house, showers, and a potable water point that serves as a parking area during events. The beach lacks sanitary facilities and rescue services.

Water

Marine cove. Beach dimensions: 70 m long, 8 m wide. The Rivière de Fond-Boucher, which marks the municipal boundary between Bellefontaine and Case-Pilote, is the primary watercourse feeding the bathing zone. The river has a steep gradient upstream of RN2, reduced flow in the final 500 metres, and sand blockages at the sea mouth.

Location

Bellefontaine, Martinique. Coordinates: Longitude 61°09'14.8'' W, Latitude 14°39'22.0'' N. An upstream parking area is available near the multipurpose hall.

Facilities

Showers located upstream of the site. Potable water point available. Toilets do not exist. No waste bins. No lifeguard post or rescue services. Bathing is unsupervised. Not accessible to persons with reduced mobility.

Water Quality

Benthic community dominated by algal turf (41.5–50.4% coverage in 2004). Coral coverage increased from 19.7% in November 2003 to 25.6% in November 2004, indicating positive environmental conditions. Ichthyological community shows 10–19 target fish species per 300 m². Fish abundance ranges from 149–363 individuals per 100 m², dominated by Pomacentridae (clownfish, 93% of total abundance) and Scaridae (parrotfish). Five sea urchin species present, with Diadema antillarum population highest at 3.18 individuals per m² in 2004.

Risks

Sewage collection occurs at multiple points due to incomplete sanitation coverage in the area. Three wastewater treatment plants serve the zone (Fond-Boucher 1 and 2 in Bellefontaine; Bâti-soleil in Case-Pilote). Flash flooding and coastal hazards are identified as threats to the site.
