The Groß Glienicker See is a calcareous, stratified lowland lake located north of Potsdam with an area of 66 hectares. It stretches north-south for 2 km with a maximum width of 530 m and a maximum depth of 11.2 m. The lake is almost entirely groundwater-fed and forms part of a chain of lakes in an ice-age channel. Water quality improved significantly from the 1980s onwards through phosphate precipitation and aeration systems, resulting in good ecological status characterized by low nutrient content and extensive macrophyte populations.
