Grosser Silbersee

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Großer Silbersee is an artificial lake located in Leverkusen, Germany. It has been designated as an EU bathing water since 2009. The lake covers 7.7 hectares with a sandy and gravelly substrate and an average depth of 8 metres. Water quality has been rated as excellent for four consecutive years from 2022 to 2025. The bathing area extends 80 metres along the shoreline.

Artificial lake. Size: 7.7 hectares. Maximum depth: 10 metres. Average depth: 8 metres. Water level fluctuations: 4 metres. Water exchange time: more than 30 days. Substrate: sandy and gravelly. Catchment area: very small, less than 10 square kilometres.

Location

Leverkusen, Germany. UTM coordinates: E 360332, N 5657017. The lake is located in lowland terrain at less than 200 metres above sea level.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: excellent (2022–2025). Water temperature range: 13.5–25.6 °C (mean 19.55 °C). pH range: 6.82–8.89 (mean 7.86). Conductivity range: 364–560 µS/cm (mean 462 µS/cm). Water transparency range: 2.0–4.5 metres (mean 3.25 metres). No relevant pollution sources identified. Occasional bird activity causes minor fluctuations in microbial counts. Historical pesticide contamination in groundwater from nearby railway tracks is declining and poses no toxicological concern.

Risks

Occasional extended algal mats present on the lake without impairment to water quality. No cyanobacteria blooms observed in the past four years. No risk of future cyanobacteria mass development. No cercariae (duck flea causing swimmer's dermatitis) detected.
