Templiner See is a large lake in southern Potsdam, part of a chain of lakes along the Havel River, which flows through its entire 7 km length as a federal waterway. The lake covers 598 hectares and lies in an ice age basin with a maximum depth of 12 metres and average depth of 3.3 metres. Most of the lake shore is characterized by residential areas, with a traditional airship harbour on the western shore and mixed forest on the eastern shore. The bathing site Waldbad Templin operates on the southeastern shore, offering extensive sunbathing areas, gastronomy, and water sports facilities.

Water

Freshwater lake (Flusssee) in an ice age basin. Area: 598 hectares. Maximum depth: 12 metres. Average depth: 3.3 metres. Maximum width: 1.2 kilometres. The Havel River flows through the entire length of approximately 7 kilometres. The lake is calcareous and non-stratified. Water transparency during summer ranges from 0.8 to 2 metres.

Location

Southern Potsdam municipality. The bathing site Waldbad Templin is located on the southeastern shore of Templiner See.

Waldbad Templin offers extensive sunbathing areas, gastronomy, playground. Water sports available. Footpath suitable for walking and hiking along the shore.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: excellent. Consistently rated as excellent from 2015–2024. Microbiological monitoring conducted every 4 weeks by Potsdam City Health Authority for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Ecological status under EU Water Framework Directive: moderate (classification 3). The lake is eutrophic and nutrient-rich despite intensive wastewater treatment. Occasional cyanobacterial blooms observed; risk of future mass development assessed as low to moderate.

Occasional cyanobacterial blooms observed in the past 4 years. Risk of future cyanobacterial mass development is low to moderate. Phytoplankton with medium risk of future mass development. Macroalgae and aquatic plants present. No danger of swimmer's itch from waterfowl. Short-term microbiological pollution not expected. Other pollution types not expected.
