Public bathing water in the Kuusamo, Posio and Taivalkoski regions is monitored by environmental health authorities according to social and health ministry regulations. Water quality is assessed for the presence of intestinal bacteria (Escherichia coli and enterococci) and sensory characteristics including colour and potential cyanobacteria blooms. Swimming is not recommended in waters affected by cyanobacteria blooms, as some toxic strains resist heat and can release toxins into steam in saunas.
