Kärdla Beach is a bathing water location situated in Kärdla town on the island of Hiiumaa, Estonia. The beach is located in Tareste Bay, which is part of the Läänesaarte sub-basin. The bathing area has been monitored for water quality since 2006 in accordance with EU bathing water directives.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified and monitored according to EU Directive 2006/7/EÜ and Estonian regulations. Monitoring data for 2006–2010 is documented. Classification follows the categories: excellent, good, sufficient, or poor.

Risks

Potential pollution sources identified include Kärdla wastewater treatment plant (HI003), AS Direct Consulting Lehtma harbour, stormwater and sewage systems, settlements, and algal blooms from potentially toxic cyanobacteria. Macroalgae and phytoplankton are monitored.
