Kleiner Wentowsee is a 50-hectare lake situated approximately 60 kilometres north of Berlin in the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park. It forms part of an ice-age channel together with the larger Grosser Wentowsee, separated by a 1-kilometre stream. The lake is very shallow with a maximum depth of 4 metres and is well mixed. It receives inflow from the Polzow Canal and drains via the Wentow Canal into the Grosser Wentowsee and the Havel River. The lake has naturally nutrient-rich conditions and characteristically turbid water, with visibility averaging 0.5 metres during the bathing season.

Water

Natural lake with a surface area of 49.5 hectares and maximum depth of 4 metres. The water body is unstratiﬁed. Water temperature ranges from 13 to 24.9 degrees Celsius. pH values range from 7.1 to 8.9. Water transparency averages 0.5 metres. Salinity is less than 0.5 per mille.

Location

Seilershof district of Gransee, approximately 60 kilometres north of Berlin, in Oberhavel district, Brandenburg. The bathing site is located at the southern shore near Seilershof, with a camping site nearby.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent (ausgezeichnet) for all assessment periods from 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. Microbiological monitoring shows E. coli 95-percentile values of 48–74 per 100 millilitres and intestinal enterococci 95-percentile values of 20–168 per 100 millilitres across monitored periods. A single exceedance of the E. coli parameter occurred in 2019. The lake is naturally eutrophic with characteristically high plankton turbidity.

Risks

Frequent cyanobacteria blooms observed during the bathing season, with high danger of future mass development. Medium danger of future phytoplankton mass development. Sensitive individuals and particularly children should avoid bathing when blue-green algae blooms are present. Short-term pollution events (microbiological exceedance of E. coli or intestinal enterococci) are expected 1–2 times per season, lasting a maximum of 72 hours, caused by rainfall runoff from the sloping beach.
