Kultakoukun uimaranta is a river bathing beach located near Harjavalta city centre in Finland. The beach features a gently sloping sand shore with changing water depths due to a hydroelectric dam. The beach is naturally muddy but has been reinforced with sand for swimming. Estimated visitor numbers range from 50–100 people per day, increasing to approximately 300 on hot days.

Water

River water body (Kokemäenjoki). Water depth varies significantly due to hydroelectric dam operations and strong currents in places. Depth measurements: 180 cm at bridge pier, 120 cm at main pier, 90 cm at pavilion pier. Naturally muddy bottom with added sand in the swimming area.

Location

Located at Siltatie 193, 29200 Harjavalta, Finland. The beach is situated close to Harjavalta city centre near roads and residential buildings. Parking is available at the beach facilities.

Facilities

Changing rooms and toilets for both men and women (accessible toilet), volleyball net, pavilion, children's playground equipment. No lifeguard service.

Season

Official monitoring occurs during the bathing season with first sample taken approximately two weeks before season start and subsequent samples at intervals not exceeding one month.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is excellent. E. coli and enterococcus monitoring conducted during bathing season with samples taken at least four times: once approximately two weeks before season start and remaining samples at intervals not exceeding one month. Blue-green algae occurs occasionally, abundance varies with weather conditions. In 2018 an oil spill (48 cubic metres) temporarily closed the beach; remediation was completed by June 2019.

Risks

Blue-green algae occurs intermittently. Strong currents and significant water depth fluctuations caused by hydroelectric dam operations. Risk of sanitary water discharge into the river during heavy rainfall when pump station capacity is exceeded. Risk of industrial incidents. Traffic bridge crosses the river adjacent to the beach with potential for minor oil leakage from vehicles. Bird droppings may cause minor water quality impacts.
