Finland Lake 1 - Excellent

Kirkkoranta is a natural sand beach located in Kuortane municipality that has served as a public bathing beach since at least the 1930s. The beach features gradually sloping shallow waters that deepen rapidly at the northern end near Kurika villa. It is situated near Kuortane church and a cemetery, with residential and recreational properties in the immediate vicinity. The beach extends continuously southward to Pappilanranta and is particularly popular with families with children.

Water

Lake Kuortaneenjärvi. Water depth reaches 1.5 meters at approximately 80–150 meters from shore under normal summer water levels. The lake bed consists of sand near shore, transitioning to silt and clay at greater depths. Annual water level fluctuations during spring floods and August can exceed two meters, but during the bathing season variation is limited to approximately one meter. Wave heights remain below one meter even in strong winds. No currents of safety concern are present.

Location

Kirkkoranta is located in Kuortane municipality at Kirkkotie 17, 63100 Kuortane. Parking is available on the beach embankment and at the church parking area. The beach is accessible from neighboring municipalities.

Facilities

Summer pavilion with showers, toilets, changing rooms, and summer café. Equipment rental offering paddleboards, water sports equipment, and summer games. Swings and carousel for children. Beach volleyball court. Waste collection points at the summer pavilion and along the beach. No lifeguard supervision.

Season

Official monitoring season: early June through August 31. First sample taken approximately two weeks before the season begins in early June.

Water Quality

Bathing water classification: excellent. Microbiological water quality: good. Water is monitored through laboratory analysis of fecal indicator bacteria (intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli) and sensory assessment. Four samples are collected during the bathing season beginning early June through August 31. Lake Kuortaneenjärvi has an ecological classification of satisfactory. Cyanobacteria observations from 2012–2016 documented 11 observations of minimal algal growth and four observations of abundant algal growth, occurring mainly in August. Dominant cyanobacteria genera include Microcystis, Aphanizomenon, and Anabaena, which can form toxic strains.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms occur primarily in August, generally minimal in extent. Wind-induced water turbidity (resuspension) occurs on shallow shorelines. Strong and prolonged rainfall increases runoff from agricultural land in the catchment area, potentially increasing microbial counts. Foaming typical of humic waters occurs during and after severe storms.
