Plage de l'Océan is a bathing beach located in the commune of Barbâtre on the island of Noirmoutier in France. This beach profile was established to assess vulnerability to water contamination and identify potential pollution sources. The beach is classified as a Type 1 profile beach and is subject to European bathing water quality directive monitoring.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by ARS (health authority) for bathing waters. Historical bacterial contamination levels are analyzed and classified according to European directive 2006/7/CE categories: excellent, good, sufficient, or insufficient. An IFREMER surveillance network monitors marine environmental quality.

Risks

Potential pollution sources identified include non-collective wastewater treatment, collective sewage systems, treatment plant discharges, stormwater outlets, salt marsh activities, and groundwater salinity issues. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential has been assessed.
