Plage de la Digue is a 400-metre sandy beach located in Tarnos in the Landes department of southwestern France. The beach extends over five kilometres and forms part of the Atlantic coastline characterized by dunes and strong oceanic influences. Two monitored swimming zones operate during summer: Plage du Métro and Plage de la Digue. The beach is bounded to the south by the Adour estuary and backed by an extensive industrial and commercial zone.

Atlantic Ocean beach with sandy substrate. Beach dimensions: 400 metres long, 100 metres wide, 40,000 square metres in area. Average slope 2%. Dominant current flows north to south with wave-generated movement. Water transparency is affected by suspension of sandy sediment from wave action.

Location

Tarnos is located in the Landes department, 5 kilometres north-east of Bayonne. The beach is accessed by a paved road with parking available. Access for disabled visitors is provided with tiralots. The nearest major city is Bayonne.

Lifeguards present (summer season). Showers and toilets available. First aid post (algeco structure). Tiralots provided for disabled access. Handiplage level 2 certification. Blue flags marking the regulated swimming zone. Garbage collection. Information point near the lifeguard post. Restaurants and activities available on the beach.

Risks

Strong westerly winds and powerful swells occur primarily in autumn and winter, particularly from October to March. Summer thunderstorm episodes present low frequency risk. Violent winds exceed 100 km/h 2–4 times annually. Swimming is forbidden at La Madrague and Entre deux digues areas.
