Plage du Bas-Pouldu is a bathing beach located in Guidel-Plages, Brittany, France. The beach was initially classified as type 3 vulnerability in 2010–2011 due to identified contamination risks, but has since improved to type 1 classification with sufficient to excellent water quality. Active management measures and pollution control interventions have significantly improved water quality over recent years. The beach is popular with families and senior citizens.

Coastal bathing area located at the mouth of the Laïta estuary (Anse du Bas-Pouldu).

Location

Guidel-Plages, in the municipality of Guidel, Brittany, France. The beach is situated on an estuary near the town of Clohars-Carnoët across the estuary.

Water Quality

Water quality was classified as type 3 (confirmed risk of contamination) in 2010–2011. As of 2014–2017, monitoring results show improvement to type 1 classification (risk of pollution not confirmed; water quality classified as sufficient, good, or excellent). Primary historical contamination sources were storm water discharge, effluent from Clohars-Carnoët wastewater treatment plant, and Laïta river inputs. The estuary was reclassified from category C (unsuitable for shellfish farming) to category B in May 2016.

Risks

Historical risks included contamination from storm water outlets, wastewater treatment plant discharge, and Laïta river inputs. These risks have been substantially mitigated through infrastructure improvements and the commissioning of a new treatment facility in June 2015.
