Lido Estensi is a sandy beach of significant tourist interest located 100 metres south of Porto Canale in Comacchio, Ferrara. The beach is part of a homogeneous 5.7 km stretch of coastline bounded to the north by Porto Garibaldi and to the south by the mouth of Canale Bellocchio. The northern section is bordered by a rock barrier extending approximately 160 metres into the sea. The surrounding area experiences high tourist use with numerous hotels and beach establishments.

Coastal marine water. Sandy beach environment. Beach width: 480–500 metres. Area extension: 0.410 km. The beach shows accumulation with advancement of the shoreline. A rock barrier extends approximately 160 metres into the sea at the northern section.

Location

Comacchio, Ferrara province, Emilia-Romagna region. Located 100 metres south of Porto Canale. The beach extends approximately 480–500 metres in width.

Facilities

Three beach establishments providing first aid services, toilets accessible to disabled users, hot showers, absence of architectural barriers, sports facilities, and food service points.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference years 2015–2018). Escherichia Coli 90th percentile: 16 CFU/100 ml; 95th percentile: 17 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal Enterococci 90th percentile: 19 CFU/100 ml; 95th percentile: 22 CFU/100 ml. No direct pollution sources are present in the bathing water area. A pressure factor exists to the north from Porto Garibaldi navigable canal mouth, which collects pre-treated wastewater from sewer system overflow structures and agricultural runoff from reclamation channels. During the bathing season, overflow operations use submersible pumps with peracetic acid dosing stations to reduce bacterial load.

Risks

Porto Garibaldi navigable canal mouth to the north may give rise to eutrophication phenomena through pre-treated wastewater and agricultural runoff. Macroalgae proliferation of genus Ulva occurred during July–August 2018 in the central-northern coastal stretch, causing modifications to recreational use during biomass accumulation phases. No cyanobacterial eutrophic events have been reported. No phytoplankton toxic effects have been registered.
