Latvian bathing season is 15 May to 15 September.

Water Quality

Water quality is assessed based on microbiological criteria, primarily Escherichia coli (E. coli) and intestinal enterococci levels. Excellent quality is defined as intestinal enterococci ≤200 CFU/100 ml and E. coli ≤500 CFU/100 ml (95th percentile); good quality as ≤400 CFU/100 ml and ≤1000 CFU/100 ml respectively; sufficient quality as ≤330 CFU/100 ml and ≤900 CFU/100 ml (90th percentile). Assessment is based on four years of monitoring data. Blue-green algal blooms are also considered in quality determinations.

Risks

Potential risks include fecal pollution from wastewater and excessive cyanobacterial (blue-green algae) blooms. The profile analyzes distributed pollution sources linked to land use, urban areas, traffic, atmospheric pollution, agricultural activities, and populations not connected to centralized wastewater systems.
