Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Lübbesee is a natural lake located southeast of Templin on the southeastern edge of the Mecklenburg Lake District. The lake measures approximately 10 km in length and averages 300 m in width, with a winding course from southeast to northwest. Around two-thirds of the lake lies within the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve, with the remaining third in the Uckermärkische Seen Nature Park. The lake has achieved an excellent water quality classification consistently from 2016 through 2024.

Water

Natural lake with a surface area of 296.68 hectares. Maximum depth 12.9 m, mean depth 6 m. Water temperature ranges from 12°C to 24.3°C with a mean of 20.7°C. Transparency ranges from 1.6 m to 3.7 m with a mean of 3 m. Water exchange time 21.9 years. The lake is primarily groundwater-fed with inflows from Lübbeseegraben in the south and several smaller streams from the west. Outflows via Hammerfließ to the north and Alter Kanal connecting to Zaarsee.

Location

Southeast of Templin, on the southeastern edge of the Mecklenburg Lake District. The bathing site is located at Templin, Seehotel. The lake's northern section adjoins the Templin district of Kuckucksheim, with additional nearby settlements at Ahrensdorf and Ahlimbsmühle.

Facilities

Boat rental available. Electric boat round trips offered from Templin shore. Rowing boats, pedal boats, and sailboats permitted; combustion engines not allowed. Wandering path along south shore from Templin to Ahlimbsmühle.

Season

Monitored by the health authority of the district through sampling every four weeks in accordance with Brandenburg Bathing Water Regulations.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2016–2024). Escherichia coli (2021–2024): 95-percentile 129/100 ml, 90-percentile 90/100 ml. Intestinal enterococci (2021–2024): 95-percentile 51/100 ml, 90-percentile 41/100 ml. pH range 7.1–8.08 (mean 7.41). Ecological status class: Moderate. No exceedances of microbiological parameters recorded. No cyanobacterial blooms observed during bathing season.
