Rivazzurra - Istituto Marco Polo is a sandy beach bathing area located in Rimini, Emilia-Romagna region, extending approximately 1.2 km along the central-southern coastal area. The beach is unprotected by cliffs and includes some free beach zones. It is characterized as a high-tourism area with numerous hotels and beach establishments, and maintains constant lifeguard services during the bathing season.

Water

Coastal marine water body in a plain alluvial area with high stability. The bathing water area extends 1.229 km.

Location

Located in Rimini municipality in the Rivazzurra area. The beach has variable width of 160–200 metres (as of 2018). Beach width measurement recorded in 2018.

Facilities

23 beach establishments with first aid services, toilets accessible to disabled persons, hot showers, no architectural barriers, sports facilities, and food service points. Lifeguard service present during bathing season.

Season

Bathing season monitoring conducted with profile update and review scheduled for 2027. Profile established May 2023.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (reference years 2019–2022). Escherichia Coli (90th percentile): 55 CFU/100 ml; Escherichia Coli (95th percentile): 78 CFU/100 ml. Enterococci intestinali (90th percentile): 26 CFU/100 ml; Enterococci intestinali (95th percentile): 32 CFU/100 ml. No water courses discharge into the bathing water area and no direct discharges to sea exist. An anomalous situation occurred on 26 July 2022 when Escherichia coli exceeded legal limits, which was classified as an anomalous situation by the European Commission. A temporary prohibition order was issued on 28 July 2022 and revoked on 29 July 2022.

Risks

One anomalous pollution event was recorded on 26 July 2022 involving Escherichia coli exceeding legal limits. No cyanobacterial eutrophication phenomena have been reported. No phytoplankton blooms of Raphidophyceae Fibrocapsa japonica were reported during 2019–2022. No macroalgae blooms were reported during 2019–2022. No short-duration pollution sources are present.
