Cap d'Ail is a coastal commune with three bathing beaches: Pissarelles and Mala at the western end, and Marquet at the eastern end near the port. The area has a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and significant autumn and spring rainfall. The beaches are situated in a Natura 2000 protected area and are subject to regular water quality monitoring at dedicated sampling points.

Water

Mediterranean Sea water bodies. Average water temperatures are 24°C in summer and 13°C in winter. Wave heights are typically low in calm periods, not exceeding 50 cm significant height on average. Posidonia seagrass meadows are present and reduce wave height by 30%. Currents vary by beach: south-north currents create rip currents at Pissarelles; diffraction patterns and strong deflection currents occur at Mala; exposure to waves from 170° to 200° at Marquet.

Location

Cap d'Ail is located in the Alpes-Maritimes department, between Eze-Sur-Mer and Monaco. Pissarelles beach is at the western extremity, accessible only on foot via the Les Pissarelles residential area. Mala beach is a natural cove accessible by a public staircase. Marquet beach is at the eastern end, accessible via avenue Marquet and is the most open to facilities and amenities.

Facilities

Pissarelles: emergency call box, public toilets, waste container area, lift pump. Mala: 4 showers, 2 restaurants, rescue post, public toilets. Marquet: nautical base, 4 showers, 2 restaurants, accessible changing facilities and toilets for disabled visitors, tennis courts, petanque area, volleyball court, access to the port via waterfront promenade, rescue post. All beaches have rescue posts open July to August.

Season

Beaches are monitored and patrolled by lifeguards from July to August.

Water Quality

All three beaches have dedicated water quality monitoring points with regular surveillance. Domestic wastewater is treated: the Pissarelles residential area uses individual on-site systems with regular SPANC inspections; other areas are connected to lift stations that direct effluent to Monaco's treatment facility. Stormwater discharge occurs at four outlets (La Pinède, La Gare, Pointe des Douaniers, and Port), with potential pollution risks identified for Pissarelles (La Pinède outlet) and Marquet (Port outlet).

Risks

Potential pollution sources include stormwater discharge (especially from Port outlet toward Marquet and La Pinède outlet toward Pissarelles), hydrocarbon contamination from pleasure boat traffic, macrodebris transported by the Ligurian current or from boat moorings. The commune is subject to urban runoff flooding risks due to high rainfall on urbanized watersheds and rapid network saturation. The area experiences wave-related natural disasters and mechanical shock from waves during storms.
