Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

The Möllensee is a narrow, winding lake approximately 3 kilometres long located about 7 kilometres southeast of Berlin's city boundary in the Berlin-Fürstenwalde Spree valley lowland. It forms the upper section of the Löcknitz lake chain and was shaped during the last ice age by meltwater flowing beneath the ice. The lake covers 62 hectares with a maximum depth of 6.8 metres and an average depth of 2.6 metres. The lake is intensely used for recreation with several campingplaces along its shores and a walking path around it.

Natural freshwater lake. Surface area: 61.57 hectares. Maximum depth: 6.8 metres. Average depth: 2.6 metres. Water exchange time: 0.6 years. Sandy geology. Water temperature range: 13.1 to 27.5 degrees Celsius (average 21.4). pH range: 7.7 to 8.9 (average 8.3). Transparency range: 0.6 to 2.5 metres (average 1.7). Salinity less than 0.5 per mille. Ecological status class: moderate (ÖZK 3).

Location

Kagel, Grünheide (Mark), approximately 7 kilometres southeast of Berlin. The bathing spot is located at Zeltplatz (campsite) on the northeastern shore near Finkenstein. Parking available at campingplaces.

Facilities

Monitoring conducted by the health authority of Oder-Spree district with samples taken every four weeks during the bathing season. Multiple campingplaces located around the lake. Walking path around the lake.

Season

Monitored from May 15, 1994 (EU registration date). Active bathing season with regular weekly monitoring.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (ausgezeichnet) for monitoring periods 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. Escherichia coli (2021–2024): 95th percentile 89/100ml, 90th percentile 67/100ml. Intestinal enterococci (2021–2024): 95th percentile 56/100ml, 90th percentile 45/100ml. No exceedances of microbiological parameters detected. Nutrient levels are high (eutrophic status both naturally and measured). Nitrogen occurs in lower concentrations than typical for freshwater lakes.

Risks

Occasional cyanobacteria blooms (blue-green algae) observed during bathing season, sometimes associated with reduced water visibility appearing as green streaks. Risk of future cyanobacteria mass development assessed as low to moderate. Macroalgae and aquatic plants present. No risk of bathing dermatitis caused by cercariae. No short-term microbiological pollution expected.
