Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Oberuckersee is a natural lake located approximately 12 km south of Prenzlau in Brandenburg, Germany, at the northern edge of the Schorfheide-Chorin biosphere reserve. The lake was formed by glacial activity approximately 20,000 years ago and covers 618 hectares, extending 5 km in the north-south direction and approximately 1.3 km in width. The lake reaches a maximum depth of 28.5 m and is classified as excellent in bathing water quality.

Water

Natural lake with a surface area of 618 hectares. Maximum depth 28.5 m, mean depth 9.2 m. Water temperature ranges from 7.7 °C to 22.6 °C (mean 19 °C). pH value ranges from 8.29 to 8.53 (mean 8.39). Water transparency at the bathing site ranges from 0.4 m to 3 m (mean 2 m). Freshwater with salinity less than 0.5‰. Water exchange time is 4.3 years.

Location

The bathing spot Warnitz, Ferienhaussiedlung is located at the eastern shore of Oberuckersee near the village of Warnitz. Prenzlau is the nearest city, approximately 12 km to the north. A campground is available in Warnitz.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent in all monitoring periods from 2016–2019 through 2021–2024. E. coli 95-percentile values: 187–238 per 100 ml. Intestinal enterococci 95-percentile values: 97–112 per 100 ml. Ecological status class according to Water Framework Directive is good (ÖZK 2). The lake was assessed as significantly over-fertilized in the 1990s but has significantly improved due to optimization of wastewater treatment. Water transparency in summer now ranges between 0.4 and 3 m.

Risks

Cyanobacterial blooms occur occasionally during the bathing season; sensitive individuals should avoid bathing during such events and follow health authority warnings at the bathing site. No future risk of mass cyanobacterial development. Macroalgae and aquatic plants are present. Short-term microbiological pollution is not expected. No other pollution sources are identified.
