Finland Lake 1 - Excellent

Onkilampi is a lake bathing beach in Kontiolahti, Finland. The beach comprises two separate sections: a sandy beach and a waterfront area with a dock. The sandy beach portion extends approximately 15 metres, while the dock area extends about 25 metres. The beach borders partially boggy and partly ditched forest areas. The lake itself is small with limited water circulation, which may negatively affect water quality. Water depths vary from shallow at the sandy beach to approximately 2 metres at the dock end.

Water

Lake (Onkilampi). The lake is small with limited water circulation. The bottom consists of sand at the sandy beach section and sand with occasional humus deposits at the dock areas.

Location

Located at Rantakuja, Lehmo, Kontiolahti. A parking area is available near the beach. The beach is accessible via signage from Lamintie.

Facilities

Changing facilities, outdoor toilet (located away from shore), 5 small rubbish bins, rescue ring, throw line.

Season

Official monitoring period: 15 June to 31 August. Estimated user numbers exceed 100 swimmers per day during the swimming season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2018–2021). Ecological status: Good. Physical parameters: Excellent. Biological parameters: Excellent. Monitoring is conducted by the municipal environmental health authority at a sampling point approximately 30 centimetres deep, two metres from the dock (left dock as viewed from shore). Four samples are taken per season: one two weeks before the swimming season and three during the season at three-week intervals. No cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) have been detected. No deviations were observed in 2018, 2019, 2020, or 2021.

Risks

The small size of the lake with poor water circulation may negatively affect water quality. Low probability of harmful macroalgae or phytoplankton proliferation.
