Lithuania Lake 1 - Excellent

Orijos Lake Beach is a public bathing area located in Kalvarija municipality, Marijampolė district, Lithuania. The beach has a natural shoreline with fine yellow sand and measures 60 metres in length. Water quality from 2018 to 2024 met excellent quality standards. The lake is surrounded by agricultural land and receives inflow from two streams: Raudnyčia and an unnamed stream.

Water

Orijos Lake is a lake-type water body classified as Lake Type 1. Average water depth is 1.5 metres, with a maximum depth of 3.0 metres. The lake is part of the Šešupė sub-basin within the Neman river basin. Average annual water discharge in the basin is 15.4 cubic metres per second.

Location

The bathing area is located at Orijos Lake, approximately 4 kilometres from Kalvarija town and 400–500 metres from the Kalvarija–Suvalkai road in Kalvarija municipality, Marijampolė district, Lithuania. Coordinates: X=54.3855, Y=23.2258.

Facilities

One toilet. Children's play area. Stationary waste bins. No showers. No pets allowed restriction not mentioned. Maximum capacity approximately 70 visitors during peak season under favourable weather conditions.

Official monitoring and water quality assessments were conducted throughout 2024. Water quality characteristics are updated if quality changes from excellent to good, satisfactory, or poor classification.

Water Quality

Water quality classification from 2011 to 2024 consistently met excellent quality standards. Blue-green algae blooms were recorded on 2024-07-17, 2024-07-31, 2024-08-13, and 2024-08-23, with swimming not recommended during these periods due to cyanobacterial risk. The lake has poor ecological potential due to phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations not meeting good ecological status requirements, attributed to diffuse pollution sources.

Risks

Blue-green algae blooms have occurred seasonally. Temporary water contamination is possible during heavy rainfall, typically resolving within 1–2 days after precipitation ends. Surface runoff from the asphalt path and vehicle parking area near the beach may contribute to pollution. The lake has poor ecological potential with elevated phosphorus and nitrogen levels.
