Location

Monitored bathing areas are located in Rovaniemi, Ranua, Pello, Kolari, and Ylitornio municipalities in Lapland, Finland. Ounaskoski is in Rovaniemi. Ylitornio has no officially monitored public bathing beaches.

Season

Official swimming season in Lapland: 25 June to 15 August. Water samples collected from EU beaches (Ounaskoski, Ounas paviljonki, Alakorkalo, Muurola) during weeks 25, 29, and 33. Other beaches sampled during weeks 26, 29, and 30.

Water Quality

Ounaskoski (EU beach) was classified as excellent quality for the 2023-2025 period. Water samples from June to August 2025 showed E. coli levels of 2–11 pmy/mpn/100 ml and intestinal enterococci at <5–5 pmy/mpn/100 ml, all below action thresholds. Non-EU beaches are monitored against threshold values of 1000 pmy/mpn/100 ml for E. coli and 400 pmy/mpn/100 ml for intestinal enterococci. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) were detected at Kuhajärvi and Multilahti in Ranua.
