Water

Haapsalu Bay, part of the Matsalu sub-basin on the coast of the Gulf of Riga. The bay contains two sections: Eeslahe (Front Bay) and Tagalahe (Back Bay).

Location

Haapsalu city, Estonia. The bathing area is located in Haapsalu Bay.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored in accordance with EU Bathing Water Directive 2006/7/EC. Monitoring results from 2006–2010 are documented. Water quality classification follows three categories: good, sufficient, or poor. Cyanobacteria blooms, macroalgae, and phytoplankton distribution are assessed. Potential pollution sources include the Haapsalu wastewater treatment plant, ports, settlements, and stormwater runoff.

Risks

Potential cyanobacteria blooms caused by toxic cyanobacteria. Macroalgae and phytoplankton blooms may occur. Short-term pollution events from stormwater discharge and other pollution sources are possible.
