Camping le Paradou is a bathing site located on a pond in Parcoul, Dordogne, in the Périgord Blanc region. The site comprises a water body with green spaces, parking, a campground with mobile home placements, and a sandy beach renewed annually. The pond is fed partly by a stream from an upstream catchment area and primarily by underground sources. Swimming is permitted year-round but unsupervised.

Water

Pond approximately 6 hectares in area. Average depth approximately 2 meters, maximum depth approximately 4 meters. The pond is fed by a stream from the upstream catchment and by underground sources. The bathing zone is approximately 50 meters long by 30 meters wide (1500 m² approximately), with a sandy bottom to a depth of 1.5 meters.

Location

Parcoul, Dordogne, Périgord Blanc region, within the Dronne river basin. The commune of Parcoul has 356 inhabitants (2009) and covers 14.2 km². Parking is available at the camping site.

Facilities

Camping with accommodation, restaurant, parking, green spaces, playground. Daily beach cleaning. Non-supervised swimming. No documented facilities for disabled access. No documentation of lifeguards, toilets, showers, or flags.

Season

Open year-round but unsupervised. Intensive monitoring conducted during summer bathing season with daily follow-up of water quality, biweekly bacteriological analyses, and monthly cyanobacteria analyses.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2010 season: excellent (following EU Directive 2006/7/CE). Bacteriological results from 2005–2010 show predominantly 'Bon' (Good) ratings with occasional 'Moyen' (Fair) ratings. Cyanobacteria were detected throughout the monitoring period with varying concentrations, including species such as Planktothrix, Aphanothece, Microcystis, Oscillatoria, and Pseudanabaena. No bathing closures have occurred since the site opened.

Risks

Cyanobacteria blooms identified as immediate risk during summer months, with potential for coloration, foam, and fish/bird mortality. Malfunction of the site's sewage system presents very close risk with suspect flows and odours. Malfunction of rainwater drainage system presents very close risk from intense storms and soil runoff. Malfunction of individual sewage systems approximately 400 meters away from the bathing zone. Gestes of malveillance documented as constant presence on site with potential for water degradation.
