Písník Mělice is a gravel pit lake in the Pardubice region of the Czech Republic, located at an elevation of 213 metres. The lake has a surface area of 0.435 square kilometres and contains no surface inflow or outflow, being recharged by groundwater. Mining activities at the site have ceased. Water quality is classified as acceptable based on microbiological indicators, with occasional cyanobacteria presence but low chlorophyll-a concentrations and high transparency indicating minimal algae bloom risk.

Water

Gravel pit lake without surface inflow or outflow. Surface area 0.435 square kilometres. Elevation 213 metres above sea level. Beach is grassy and sandy; lake bottom is sandy. Influenced by a groundwater flow system with a total influence area of 2.1 square kilometres.

Location

Near the town of Přelouč in the Pardubice region. The bathing area is operated by the City of Přelouč and includes facilities at Autokemp Marin and Tábořiště Miloslav Vařák. The beach extends approximately 1,800 metres.

Facilities

Cottages, showers, toilets, campground for 80 tents and 40 caravans, restaurant, and natural camping area. Daily visitor numbers less than 1,000 persons.

Water Quality

Water classified as acceptable according to microbiological indicators (enterococci and Escherichia coli). In 2024, intestinal enterococci reached a maximum of 148 CFU/100 ml. Phosphorus content does not exceed limit values. Occasional cyanobacteria presence detected, but low chlorophyll-a concentrations and average transparency of 1.0–4.5 metres indicate minimal cyanobacteria bloom risk. No bathing bans have been issued. Monitoring conducted from 2004 to 2024.

Risks

Cyanobacteria risk identified at the main monitoring point, though assessed as very low due to high water transparency and low chlorophyll-a. Main contamination risks from bathers and sport fishing activities (high and low microbial risk respectively). Residential recreational development along the shore poses high microbial contamination risk. Agricultural nutrients from groundwater present medium phosphorus risk.
